This course is devoted to developing all of the language arts (reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and enacting). The goal of the writing program is the development of fluency, focus, and structure in a variety of genres, including the persuasive, narrative, and expository essay, response to literature, and other modes. Appropriate attention is paid to editing skills. Literature instruction encourages thoughtful interpretation of various genres and includes adolescent fiction, mythology, and a Shakespearean play as well as the novel, short story, essay, poem, and nonfiction article. Special attention is also given to development of research and technology skills.
Course Objectives: In keeping with WesthillŐs Mission Statement and the English DepartmentŐs Learning goals, students will:
á Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of literary form and terminology
á Demonstrate competent writing and speaking skills, including improved vocabulary and grammar usage
á Demonstrate interpersonal skills in all classroom situations
á Demonstrate critical thinking skills
Selected poetry, short stories, films, and nonfiction articles will come from various sources. Field Trips, Performances, computer lab, and the media center will be other sources for developing reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and computing skills.
Texts: The House on Mango Street, Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, Mythology, and other appropriate works of literature.

Homework, participation, expectations,and do nows are worth 1/3 of each quarter grade.
Tests, quizzes, essays, projects, Independent Reading Book Reviews, and presentations are worth 2/3 of each quarter grade.
á Work that is not handed in on the due date will be a 0.
á If a student is absent from class they will have three days to make up class work from the day that they return. (Work will be in a folder with the studentŐs name on it). If work was due on the day when the student was absent, the student must hand in the work on the first day they return to school. If work is not handed in on the first day back, the grade will be a 0. (8 absences= failing grade- max. of 59- See school policy for details)
*Make-up time for tests, other work, and for extra help can be made by appointment any day after school.
