ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

The University College at Fairfield University offers Summer Reading Skills and Speed Reading Programs for Children through Adults. Students in these programs usually improve comprehension one to two grade levels while doubling their reading speed. They also learn the best way to re ad textbooks, take notes, and study for tests. The Columbia University Science Honors Program (SHP) has begun its application process for the 2010-2011 school year. This highly competitive program offers science and math enrichment classes on Saturday mornings to 650 students selected from 750 high schools in the area. There will be openings for 400 new students next year. You should be a current 9th, 10th, or 11th grader and have a strong interest and exceptional ability in science and math.
Students can do an on-line appication (go to http://www.columbia.edu/cu/shp/apply.html), and request that your counselor mail an official transcript directly to the program. Your science or math teacher, or your guidance counselor must submit an on-line recommendation for you for the program as well. There will be a three hour entrance exam at Columbia in April. Deadline for receipt of student online applications is March 3. The rest of the package must be received by March 24.

The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine is for high-achieving students in
grades 9 - 12,
who are intereted in a career in medicine.
Students will meet with leaders in the field and employs visits to medical research and practice facilities and allows participants hands-on experience. There are eight different sites for the program throught the United States. For more information, go to www.nylf.org/MED/index.cfm. Then see Mrs. Levin if you wish to be nominated. After nomination, you will receive an application package directly from he organization.

The Center for Global Studies is an Inter-District Magnet High School for International Studies, specializing in Arabic, Chinese and Japanese Languages. It is located at Brien McMahon High School, 300 Highland Avenue, Norwalk. The Traveling School for Girls
This program is like no other--designed especially for girls 15-18, students earn full academic credit for seven semester courses in math, history, science, language arts, foreign language, PE, and Global Studies.
This 15-week program travels to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia during the Southern Africa Semester;
the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia for the South America Semester; Nepal and Thailand during the Southeast Asia Semester; and the North and South Islands of New Zealand during the New Zealand Semester.
