A Day in the Westhill Media Center

A Very Busy Place!

The Media Center at Westhill is used by many classes and teachers.   Students come from their study hall classes or academic classes to work on projects and assignments every period!

We are:

•  Teachers who:

•  teach students what resources are the best for their particular assignment and how to use them.

•  teach Internet searching skills.

•  help students one-on-one complete their assignments.

•  teach students how to avoid plagiarism by citing and documenting their sources according to the MLA format.

•  help and teach new teachers how to use the media center’s resources and the computer network.

•  Librarians who:

•  help students individually to do their research effectively.

•  complete research for teachers and administrators as needed.

•  circulate all the resources in the media center.   This must be organized so that the location of everything is always

    known.

•  set policy re student use of the center and passes.

•  keep the center open from 7 am to 3 pm every day.

•  Technicians who:

•  troubleshoot 32 computers in the media center, in a computer lab, and in classrooms.

•  call for technical support when we can’t fix something and work with the technician when he comes.

•  fix student logins when students are new or have forgotten a password.

•  troubleshoot the copier and call for repair.

•  maintain the media center web page.

•  catalog and create the online database of library holdings.

•  inventory the collection every year and withdraw titles that are lost or hopelessly out of date ( so you don’t spend

time looking for books that are lost ).

•  Equipment distributors who:

•  maintain a variety of types of equipment and manage its circulation in the school including:

•  Managers who:

•  circulate resources, manage overdues and fines ( yes, we do charge fines for overdues ).

•  check student passes according to Westhill policy.

•  oversee internet use according to Board of Education policy.
