It is with great sadness that I inform you of the untimely death of David Buitrago, a junior at Westhill High School.

David was a proud member of our football team as well as the JROTC and the Futures Five Program. His dream was to serve our country in the military.

I went to visit his mom this morning and she asks that we all pray for David and their family. They have not yet finished funeral arrangements.

We will have a counselor here at school, in the main office, tomorrow from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m if you have a need.

URGENT (Pink Slime Memo)

	Dear Families,

You may have read or heard news reports about Lean Finely Textured Beef (also referred to as LFTB or "pink slime"). I want to update you on what action I have directed our food service provider, Chartwells, to take regarding the purchase and sale of this product.

As we have recently learned, LFTB is produced from beef trimmings. This product is treated with ammonium hydroxide to reduce bacteria. The USDA allows up to fifteen percent of LFTB in the final product and does not require it to appear on package labels. LFTB is present in 70-80% of ground beef products sold in grocery stores, restaurants, and other food service establishments. It is also included in the ground beef provided to school districts which purchase it through the National School Lunch Program. Although the USDA has certified the safety of LFTB, this week, many grocery stores and other commercial enterprises have announced they will withdraw the product due to public concern. Likewise, Stamford Public Schools will also stop serving LFTB, effective Monday, April 2nd and continuing through the end of this school year.

Chartwells will alter the district’s menus, substituting chicken or turkey for LFTB. As soon as possible, the revised menus will be posted on the district website, www.stamfordpublicschools.org. Starting next Fall, school districts will be able to purchase LFTB-free ground beef from the USDA. Pending further information from the USDA and other sources, we will investigate buying only ground beef that is LFTB-free for our cafeterias for 2012-2013.

Our food service contract requires the highest standards for the meals we serve our students each day. For example, products must be free of trans fats and hydrogenated oils. No high fructose corn syrup, MSG, artificial sweeteners or caffeine can be used. Foods are baked rather than deep fried. Milks must be unflavored 1% or skim, free of hormones and antibiotics. A full list of these specifications is available at www.stamfordpublicschools.org.

I hope this information is helpful and reassuring.

	Sincerely,

	Estimadas familias:
