A change in the Stamford academic-eligibility requirements to participate in athletics
Sean Otterspoor

From Dick Cerone, Director of Athletics

Beginning with the spring 2024 athletic season a change will be made in the Stamford academic-eligibility requirements to participate in athletics. The current requirements, which are included in BOE policy 5118R, mandate that a student pass 5 classes, and earn a minimum quarterly GPA of 2.00 in the most recent marking period (or for the previous year for the start of fall sports) in order to participate in athletics.  Additionally, students with a simple GPA of 2.00-2.29 are required to attend three sessions of PurplePACT per week for the duration of their season, or until the next marking period grades are released.

Effective with the start of the spring 2024 season, the minimum GPA requirement will move to 1.70.  Athletes with GPAs between 1.70 and 2.29 will be required to attend PurplePACT.  Students must still pass 5 classes to be eligible.

The primary reasons for the change are:

  • It will allow us to keep more students involved in our athletic program, with the attendant benefits for the students of being engaged in a positive co-curricular activity after school.
  • It will allow us to get more students into the academic support program, which was expanded and improved this year with the addition of several more faculty members being available to assist students.
  • It puts us more in line with local districts similar to ours (Norwalk and Danbury), both of which have the same basic GPA requirement we are moving to.  No other FCIAC districts beyond Norwalk, Danbury, and Stamford have any minimum GPA requirement.  In addition, no other district in our conference beyond Stamford, or as far as I have been able to determine, in the state, requires student-athletes to pass five classes.  They only require a student-athlete to pass four classes, which is the CIAC minimum academic requirement.

All spring eligibility decisions will be made based on the new standard.  Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions/concerns, or if you need any further information regarding the new eligibility requirements.

Thank You

STAMFORD PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Summary of Regulation 5118R-Eligibility for High School Athletics

A student who has an out-of-district transfer from one Stamford public high school or Stamford public charter school to another shall be ineligible for interscholastic competition for a period of 365 days commencing upon the date of registration at the high school to which the student transfers. If a student transfers due to admission to a special program (ECS, IB, JROTC, Agriscience, etc.) or has a change in residency impacting the districted home school and the transfer is approved by the district then the above rule may be waived.
Students in the freshman class must be enrolled in at least five credit-bearing courses to be eligible for a fall sport.

To participate in any sport a student must:

  • be enrolled in at least five classes
  • pass and earn credit in five credit bearing courses in the marking period previous to and during the sport (or the previous year to begin a fall sport)
  • attain a minimum 1.70 simple grade point average (GPA) in the marking period previous to and during the sport (if applicable).

-Students whose GPA for the marking period is 2.30 or greater are considered to be eligible to fully participate in the interscholastic sports program*.
-Students whose GPA is between 1.70 – 2.29 for the marking period are eligible to fully participate in the interscholastic sports program but will be required to attend the PurplePACT academic support program*.
-Students whose GPA is 1.69 or lower for the marking period are ineligible to participate in interscholastic athletics**.

Please note:

  • Seniors who have already earned 21 or more credits may take a minimum of four credit-bearing courses to remain eligible.
  • Final year’s grades (GPA) in a given year shall determine eligibility for the fall season unless the student has successfully met the eligibility requirements by attending summer school during the same academic year.
  • Any student who does not meet the 2.30 grade point average and falls between the 1.70 – 2.29 GPA range (GPA) will be deemed in need of academic support and will be required to attend the school’s academic support program.

*“Eligible” means a student has met all of the requirements as outlined in this regulation to participate fully in the athletic program. Academic support is support provided through the PurplePACT program for student athletes who earn a GPA between 1.70 and 2.29. Academic support may include but is not limited to the following support areas: attendance, behavior, academics. It also requires regular attendance of PurplePACT academic support sessions.

**“Ineligible” means a student has not met all of the requirements as outlined in this regulation to participate fully in the athletic program. Student athletes who are ineligible may, at the discretion of the head coach and Athletic Director, participate in practices and academic support, but may not play in athletic contests or games until the end of that marking period, at which time they would need a minimum 1.70 GPA in order to be eligible to compete in games/matches/meets. If they do not achieve a GPA of at least 1.70 at the end of that marking period, they will be released from the program.
